About the AAA The Amateur Astronomers Association (AAA) is a nonprofit membership organization located in New York City whose purpose is to promote the study of astronomy and emphasize its cultural and inspirational value through education, recreation, research, member activities and public outreach. As the Association approaches its 100th anniversary in 2027, we are looking for an experienced leader to help strengthen the organization and position it for its next century. The Opportunity The AAA is seeking a hands-on Executive Director to serve as a strategic partner to the Board and the organizational link across the Association. The Executive Director will connect and orchestrate the strategic, operational and tactical elements of the AAA, helping ensure that organizational priorities move effectively from ideas and decisions into coordinated action and measurable results. This is a hands-on role. The Executive Director will work with the Board, Executive Committee, committees, volunteers and other stakeholders to understand needs, build alignment, coordinate resources, remove obstacles and keep important initiatives moving. The Executive Directors role is not limited to managing, coordinating, or facilitating the work of others; the Executive Director is expected to personally undertake and execute substantive work associated with the organizations key priorities and initiatives. Key Responsibilities Partner with the Board, Executive Committee and officers of the organization to translate the AAAs strategic direction into measurable objectives, priorities and results. Take direct ownership of high-priority projects and programs, including performing the substantive work necessary to achieve successful outcomes Work across committees and organizational stakeholders to identify needs and opportunities, bring them forward to the Board for prioritization, build alignment among the appropriate stakeholders and coordinate implementation of agreed-upon priorities Work closely with the Executive Committee to provide the hands-on administrative and organizational coordination necessary to keep priorities and initiatives moving. Work across the Association to assess whether the people, processes and technology needed to achieve organizational priorities are in place, identify gaps and coordinate with the appropriate stakeholders to address them. Strengthen communication and collaboration among the Board, committees, volunteers and other stakeholders while improving organizational alignment and accountability. Help coordinate and provide support on major Association initiatives including the AAAs Centennial in 2027 by bringing together the appropriate committees, stakeholders, resources, timelines and deliverables. Coordinate cross-organizational initiatives that support membership growth, volunteer engagement, educational programming, community outreach, partnerships, fundraising and other priorities that advance the AAAs mission. Ensure compliance with nonprofit governance requirements, applicable regulations and organizational policies. Leadership Competencies Significant organizational leadership and management experience. A demonstrated ability to connect strategy with execution. Strong coordination, project management and organizational skills. Experience working across organizational boundaries and aligning diverse stakeholders. The ability to lead through influence rather than authority. The ability to work effectively within a volunteer-driven organization. Strong communication, relationship-building and problem-solving skills. The ability to see the big picture while remaining willing to roll up their sleeves. Sound judgment, integrity, initiative and a strong sense of accountability. Experience with a nonprofit, membership association, educational institution, museum or similar mission-driven organization is desirable. An appreciation and passion for astronomy and science is highly desirable. Most important is a genuine commitment to the AAAs mission, its members, its volunteers and the communities it serves.

Part-Time Employee, Primarily Remote Compensation

$40,000 annually The position requires flexibility to participate in Board and committee meetings, Association programs and selected evening or weekend events.
